Twilight Staff Trial — Update & Removal, Take #1

On the first of October, 2009 Twilight Gaming implemented the ticket system for their newly appointed operators. The new ticket system which allows to create, and vote on tickets if they meet two specific requirements. There are only two requirements needed for the system to work, and it includes: (1) the account is level 10 or above & (2) your account is verified by email.

While the ticket system is still in beta phase, some of the operators have been slaving away at making sure that the correct people are punished for various offenses. Despite the fact that there are a few kinks in the system, namely the lack of eye candy and what some call ‘simplicity’, we are really happy with what has happened over the past 30 days.

Keeping this short and to the point:

Today marks the first 30 days of the new ticket system, and as warned we will be removing certain staff members due to inactivity and lack of work ethic. While we do understand that it is a busy time of the year — exams etc — we cannot allow people to slack during a trial period. Read the rest of this entry »

Ubuntu 9.10 is out!

Today was the day some of us have been waiting a long time for. Well, not that long really – just 6 months. Like clockwork, the Ubuntu team have released their latest and greatest – a highly polished distrubution of Linux. Ubuntu is backed by Canonical, which is part of Mark Shuttleworth’s repertoire. 9.10 – known as “Karmic Koala” – comes with Gnome 2.28 which delivers a clean, user-friendly interface which can look as amazing or simple as you wish. The real benefit of Linux is what lies underneath the shine provided by Compiz Fusion: a kickass heart which beats harder, better, stronger and faster than Windows ever will.

Ubuntu is the weapon of choice for most of the Twilight Development team. Indeed, TwilightGaming.co.za is powered by Ubuntu 8.04, which is the latest “Long Term Support” (LTS) release. This newest release brings improved performance and eye candy, as well us major software updates such as Firefox 3.5. The key difference between distributions (flavours) of Linux is the package manager. Ubuntu’s is known as Aptitude. Aptitude is responsible for installing and configuring new software as well as keeping existing software up to date. For example, take a look at  Koala’s new Software Center: select it from the main menu, type the name of the application you want.. and a few minutes later, its installed and running. Installation files get pulled off Mirror, which means local bandwidth. Aptitude does the installation and configuration for you. Ubuntu maintain a comprehensive list of software – you can install anything from a Web Server to an IRC client without breaking a sweat.

Linux isn’t the best choice for gamers – purely because games are designed for DirectX and Windows. However, more and more people are adopting it and, as a result, some games now come with Linux clients. A great example of this is the upcoming Heroes of Newerth which comes with a Linux client. This client is easy to install and performs equal or better to it’s Windows counterpart. Assuming you do more than play DirectX games, I highly encourage you to check out Ubuntu. You can order a free CD (they’ll post it to you) from ShipIt or download it locally from Mirror.

Booming right at ya

Well, howdy there folks. We’ve been considering for some time how to best deliver news, updates and so forth to the community. After much trial and error, we’ve bitten the bullet and joined the throng of WordPress’ing bloggers. This blog is going to hopefully be the solution to our problems. In addition to server news, expect articles from our administration and development teams and links to articles pertaining to DotA, Diablo II and so forth.

We’ll be working on integrating the comment system with your Twilight Gaming account – so please bear with us while we work on that. If you have any suggestions or ideas for this blog, please send your ideas to the development mailing list.
